They are most likely digging for the larva of the green beetle. You can buy stuff at Walmart,lowes, to treat your yard for them. Love up green beetle larva online for more info.

I replaced my lawn with planters that they can't get into. Tried low fences etc finally gave up. When I found out they carry the leprosy germ (Hansen Disease) I lost my desire to dig in the dirt anyway.
