Fresh fruit such as apples. pears and bananas are good choices. For a sweet treat, offer a frozen fruit pop. Bake some peanut butter or oatmeal cookies. (Make sure the child does not have food allergies.)
Just a thought. Depending on the age of the child, you could give him/her a popsicle with a cupcake wrapper on the wooden stick. This would keep drips into clothes to a minimum. Also, you could give cookies or fruit.

Depend on age of child. Apple, banana?
I actually don't think there is anything that isn't messy to a small child. Even fruit can get all over them. After all, they are little and are still learning to eat. :) Having said that, I like fruit, cookies made with oatmeal and low amounts of sugar, oatmeal muffins (my recipe uses yogurt, bananas, oatmeal & honey) - break them up in little pieces and put them on a plate. My grandkids have loved homemade frozen fruit pops since day one, but I only make them in the summer when they can go outside and it doesn't matter if they get messy. These days, they are a little older and are a little less messy. Now they are into ice cream. I try to stay away from chocolate due to the mess, but, ya know what? They love chocolate, my hubby (who is there) loves chocolate, their mom doesn't care if they get messy so I guess I don't care anymore either. We make a mud puddle "lake" on our sidewalk every week when it's warm. They get dirty but have a ball. We keep a change of clothes at our house for that reason. Something else that is good, doesn't show much of a mess, but isn't the healthiest is white cupcakes with white frosting or vanilla ice cream.
Good luck!
Am I missing something, I thought she was asking about the least messy craft for small children?? You can buy precut foam shapes from Michaels craft store and have the children glue them onto a wood frame. Michaels also carries wood craft frames for $1.00!
