2 yrs ago I had snails in my metal mail box that is on a metal (wrought iron) pole. Don't know how they got inside but they did and they were eating my mail. I pored plain old table salt around the bottom of the post ( yes the grass turned brown) and inside of the mail box. This worked for me. Still don't know how they got in with their shells because there isn't any opening big enough. They didn't open the door to the mail box! Haven't seen them again. Good luck.
If you are not afraid to use pesticides, there is a wonderful product called Metarex for snail control. Scattered as per instructions it is not a danger to pets or squirrels, etc. or the environment. Snails are attracted to it and once they feed, they die. It is relatively rainfast. You can search the web for places to buy. I am a citrus farmer and snails are a real problem for us and we are always searching for new control methods. This has worked wonders for me.
Crush egg shells, scatter around wherever they travel, around plants, posts etc. Crash finely, scatter rather heavy. Dried coffee grounds also works.
