Without having a picture to see what you want to do, if you are talking about re staining the piece, pick up some Zip Strip on Amazon or at Walmart. You paint it on with an old brush (that you will throw away after), let it sit and using a putty knife, steel wool and dental pick (for the crevices), you can clean it up pretty good. If you want to paint the piece (which is easier), rough it up a little with sand paper and get some pretty chalk paint and paint it.
