Training. Your dogs will continue to scratch unless you set boundaries for them. Every time your dog goes to the door correct them. I've trained my GSD to not go closer than 3 feet from the door. Another alternative is to take distilled water and cayenne pepper and spray the door and around the door. Most dogs will avoid the smell since it irritates their sinuses. Of course you will have to reapply every so often. Good luck!
Metal plates on the scratching area
First you need to find out why they are scratching at the door. Do they do this when they need to go out? Chances are this is how they tell you they need a potty break. Consider yourself lucky if this is the case. I would install a metal kickplate (think restaurant kitchen doors here), or install a doggie door. Have you ever trained your dogs? Now may be a time to start.
