We had a wet spring, followed by excessive heat, my figs are not edible and dropping, hope you have a better crop!
Yup - they'll do that. I cut the little sprouts off all the time right next to the ground. I don't know what type of fig tree you have, but the figs on mine do not grow on the branches that are parallel to the ground, but only after the branch has turned upright toward the sky. I also prune after the last frost as I find when I prune earlier, more branches die back from the frost.
