Paul M on Jul 29, 2011If you build a masonry type mail box make a good footer and then use mortar to fill some of the cells of your block base, at least the corners, and tie it to the footer. We have had several incidents in Fairburn where the brick mailboxes have been hit by cars, some not very hard, and they have all fallen apart on contact. I noticed that none of them are tied together in any way. It is just block and brick stacked together with mortar. Well that is ok but tying it all together is much better and stronger so that if struck it will take substantial force to damage the structure. Then you'll know who hit you because they won't just drive off, like most of them have done down here.Helpful Reply

Ellen C on Jul 29, 2011Elizabeth...be aware the depending on your street classification in Va Bch, there are restrictions on constructing a "fixed object" within the public right of way....where the majority of mailboxes are placed. Brick mailboxes do not offer a "break away" design at road side for passing vehicles. If you're on a road that receives Va State road maintenance payments, VDOT has guidelines for mailbox placement and type as well.Helpful Reply
