What gives DVD mosaics their different colors?

The light reflecting off the CDs is usually enough to give the mosaic its unique color. Though you can also go ahead and paint them!

It is the thin film (that actually plays music) that has color. You have to separate that from the hard clear plastic.
It is also the laser lines cut or burnt into the plastic that allows the disc to act as a prism. Have to fact check the specifics
