This sewing machine may be old but the table doesn't have to look it.
I had bid on this sewing machine in an auction. I really didn't expect to win it. I knew that if I had won, I would have to do something with the table.
- I made sure to cover the sewing machine with a plastic bag and put the machine under in it's spot in the cabinet. I made sure to tape all of the holes in the bag to make sure none of the dust got into the machine.
- I took the brass hinges off and sanded down the complete table. Once all sanded, I wiped the whole table down with a damp lint free rag to make sure I wasn't painting on dust.
3. I painted the table in white. I used a semi gloss paint and it took 3 coats to completely cover nicely. Make sure to dry after each coat. If not, the paint can gum up and bubble.
4. After all coats were dry, I reattached the brass hinges. (I actually cleaned the hinges with Brasso brass cleaner. It cleaned them up quite nicely.)
5. A new glass knob was added to the table to bring it up to date.
Small felt pads were used on the ends of the table leaf so when folded into a table, they do not scratch the base table underneath.
We are currently using this piece as a side table in our guest room. When needed we simply open the sides and lift up the sewing machine. Dual purpose furniture!
