I would get some astroturf to make a green area for relaxing and a big market umbrella or sun sail for shade, and some even add a golf tee area. Create a paver area for barbecuing and eating on. Put some containers with hardy succulents, and maybe a bubbling fountain. I always use magazines and landscaping books for inspiration.
Look into xeriscaping . . . I think you might like it. ☺
I'd make a nice patio of slate or pavers, if you don't already have one, and add a shade structure or shade sail. Lattice is always nice for shelter from the sun and prying eyes. For the rest of the yard, perhaps some artificial turf for a pleasing-to-the-eye-look, and xeriscaping for the rest, as the two other Hometalkers suggested.
I used to live in Chandler and Phoenix.Back then, some people would go out to the desert and dig up their own landscaping plants, like young mesquite trees, different cacti that flower, etc. etc.
I'm sure a lot has changed since then(early 80's!) but there are still places where this can be done. Not like South Mountain state park,of course, but native plants are your best bet.Hope this helped.God bless 😊
