You can use any soft, pale color. But I'd take a different tack and use smaller scale furniture, keeping the room free of clutter and nick knacks. You can use a darker color on one wall if you want to make that a focal point.
Any really pale color will work, JIN60. Very light beige, blue, yellow, green or ivory would all be lovely.
Any light colour will work, dove grey, pale blue, pale yellow
Here's an interesting article on choosing paint colors that may help you.

I used a very light warm grey, but any light color would work. Anytime you can get natural or reflected light in a smaller area, helps to make the space look bigger.
Mirrors help with the illusion, as well. Don't hang heavy drapes and your furniture should be on exposed legs, no skirts.
I just used a light golden yellow color in my dining area. It really brighten it up.
A pale gray is very neutral and can have a lightening effect.
Thhank you all so much i hadnt thought about mirrors or skirting.
You could also paint a horizontal stripe in the next shade darker or lighter of your wall color that would lengthen or widen the illusion of the room. https://www.google.com/search?q=pictures+of+room+with+one+decorative+horizontal+stripe&client=opera&hs=CS4&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjIyN71sYTVAhVRyGMKHVS-DkUQ7AkIRg&biw=1366&bih=629
I have also done this with clear satin on a flat wall and its real subtle, or even a satin paint when the rest of the wall is flat.
