I'd use TSP cleaner on the cabinets first. Use a wood filler for any knots that are not flush with the rest of the wood, then sand. I'd then use a good quality primer to help the paint adhere. Lastly, I'd paint with sponge roller.
there is a primer available that is specifically designed to stop bleed of knots. Check with your local building supply or paint store
You need a shellac to seal the knots. Bin is the best.
If you are going for a rustic look with a glaze, the knots look amazing when they bleed through!!
Clean the cabinets with TSP. Apply a basecoat of Kilz Adhesion Primer. Your cabints are now ready to receive paint in the color and finish of your choice.
I've had very good luck with Rustoleums Cabinet Transformations. The kits include everything you need to refinish your cabinets including the cleaner. The best part is there is no sanding required and no well ventilated area is needed.
