Squirrels don't like the smell of Vicks. So I usually wipe it up and down the pole. Also, I know they don't like the taste of safflower seeds. My mother has a baffle that my brother put on the pole to keep them from climbing, but they have a tendency to be able to jump above it at times.
Surrender and enjoy them!
Lay big toy rubber snakes on the ground under and/or hang in trees where squirrels are a bother 😄.Gardening centers sell fake owls to scare away critters too, even crows! They can be hung or mounted on a post. 😁😁
They don't like the taste of cayenne pepper either but the birds do, and putting Vaseline on the pole works so much better than a slinky .
I hang mine on shepherd hooks and just far enough away from trees or shrubs that they can use to jump to the feeders. I also leave the seed that falls off the feeders for the squirrels and chipmunks. I also have treats for the squirrels in the tree in the front yard and have places for the squirrels and chipmunks away from the feeders. I put out stale nuts, cookies, cereal, bread, anything that they will eat and then know that they can get treats without raiding the feeders.
We bought this kind of feeders and they can't get into them at all. They try but just can't. If you don't want to get new feeders, you might try spraying WD40 on the pole. They can't climb if it's slippery. It lasts for quite awhile too before you need to reapply.
