We had a shaded back yard, and several spots... nothing worked. You either have to design around it (which we did for years, we put in a mulched garden which was very pretty & it was an easy, quick fix) or "fix" the problem. After 10 years or so... we cut down a few trees, and brought in top soil. For us, it was worth the expense, our backyard was gorgeous ❤️
First we had centipede grass, but it died. So we went to use St. Augustine grass and it has survived very well. We do have clay for the base but have put down top soil for the roots to hold on to. It has worked so far.
Plant a ground cover that will thrive in the location instead of trying to get grass to tolerate unfavorable conditions. Grass isn't worth the effort.
Try clover.
Clover will survive! Good luck!
