Real wood, not particle board or other composites. Well-made - if you can wobble it in the store, it will fall apart at home. You might try antique stores (except for dining chairs), we have cabinets and tables that are well over 100 years old and they are much stronger than anything we see at stores currently. Check joints - dovetail rather than just glue, etc. You might have to pay more, but you can pass them down to your grandchildren.
We have bought a lot of furniture from this company and it's wonderful. You will have to find the closest local dealer. Believe me it will last a lifetime! http://www.simplyamish.com/index.cfm
I have had success with all of my Ethan Allen pieces. I have a dining set that is going on thirty years old that I've not had a moments problem. Nothing has broken and the mechanism that opens and closes the table works as well as the day I got it. The chair cushion covers have been changed twice to keep up with the current style. I have a green Ethan Allen china cabinet that I inherited from my mother that is over forty years old. Not only have these pieces seraved me well, but they are still gorgeous and I get compliments on them regularly. My mother and I have also had success with their upholstered pieces. Some have needed to be reupholstered due to stains and changing fabric fashions, but we've never had a structural problem. Of course, Ethan Allen isn't inexpensive, but the quality, at least for me, was worth the extra cost.

Amish-made furniture is REAL wood and lasts a lifetime!
I have always bought good furniture. There is some cheaply made furniture out there that looks good and sits comfortably for a while. If you can ( and this sounds weird) pick up one end of the couch and see if you can actually wiggle the frame of the couch. Also I check out the quality of the upholstery which would be the first to go. Take your time and shop around and don't be afraid to pay a bit more because in the long run it is worth it if you plan on having it for a while
I believe in looking for old pieces. Look for dove tailed drawers, solid wood. Go to used furniture stores. Look at the furniture - you will learn what a sturdy, well made piece of furniture is. Then go to tag sales, etc. to buy. You may have to refinish an old piece, but they'll last a lifetime.
Flea Markets. Real Wood, American Made Furniture. "Recycling at it's Finest"
it's not so much where you shop but what you shop for....it's better to save up and purchase one good piece at a time than to purchase a whole set of something of inferior quality. I've found that purchasing solid wood furniture as opposed to laminate or pressboard means that it will last a lot longer ...a lot of the time, you can get a solid wood piece in an antique shop or 'junk' shop. Also getting a high quality fabric instead of fake leather, avoiding trendy colours and styles will help to ensure longevity

Solid wood furniture lasts forever. Mahagony, cherry , walnut are extremely durable with the right care. All of these are expensive but I am assuming you are willing to pay for permanence. Manufacturers of great furniture are Baker, Pennsylvania House, American Drew, Henredon to name a few. There are some teak products that are in the luxury line if you are looking for a more modern look. Soft products like couches, chairs, mattresses will never last forever. The solid wood frames of a couch or chair will always last and the item can be reupholstered but all in all I think you will look at having to replace those kinds of items every ten years. If you are located anywhere near Hickory, North Carolina you can go there and see some very high end furniture. Stay away from veneers since they are usually applied over a cheap softer wood. Rule of thumb; if you can easily pick up a piece of furniture and not feel that it is solid and hefty, do not buy it.
Sturdy, Quality Furniture is in my immediate future. To ALL the people who gave me Great ideas, I say THANK YOU!!!
Don't forget to look at home/estate sales and moving sales. Older furniture was of much higher quality than what is made now. If you can find an older dining room or bedroom set, you've struck gold. A friend recently picked up three gorgeous mid-century modern tables for free when a neighbor cleaning out to move put them at the curb! A good polishing, and they look fantastic.
Salvation Army! I purchased two beautiful Castro live seats, like new, 20 years ago, they have held up through, kiddo grand kids etc. Look for 50s furniture, a 50s dining room set is a jewel, storage, style. Love used furniture.
I still have my mid-century cherry furniture brought at the North Carolina at the furniture mart. North Carolina had lots of manufacturers and their marts were great. https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=shopping+for+furniture+in+north+carolina&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
You can also hire a decorator to take you to the designer marts in major cities for quaity pieces at lower prices than retail store.
