Hello Nancy; Well now; you do know that you want to be out there in the pitch black darkness pulling off slugs!!!! LOL!!
As was stated, slugs love beer, they will drink it and will drown.
I hope that this helps you!! Take Care!
Put crushed eggs shells around the dahlias.
I have tried putting out a pie tin filled with beer to attract them away from dahlias and hostas. Now I put down a layer of crushed egg shells around the plants and that seems to keep them away. Good luck.

Your "not an option" is an option and it does work well. I have done a similar thing with another plant and you will be surprised how well it worked and it eliminated an enormous amount of the slimy pets for a few years. Alternatively you could consider organic methods which you can locate by searching the internet e.g. salt, coffee grounds, beer.
dishes with beer in between the plants. Slugs like that and they will drown in it. However, even though you don't like the idea...flashlight at night, pick them up with tongs and drop them in a jar of water. The next day or later you can just pour the water with the slugs down the toilet
LOL!!!!! You got that right, Girl!!
