Drilling into a hollow door - are there special considerations?

I want to affix a hook onto my bathroom door but the door is not solid (sounds like it is hollow when I tap it). Can I drill into the door and affix the hook with screws or is that not recommended with a hollow door?

  • No hook will stay in a hollow core door. You may be able to use an anchor. Good luck

what kind of hook Sally? I thinking your hook is for a robe or towel. I have a hollow core door to my bath & I used liquid nail (it comes in a tube that we Ladies can handle) I put a small amount on the back of hook get glue get tacky placed on door then put the screws in wiping off any glue off get dry .

A hollow core door only has solid wood at the edges. I wanted towel racks on the back of one once so I got long towel bars and the custom cut down the bars so I could mount the brackets to the edges. You could put a board thar soans from edge to edge and the put your hook into the board.
  • They make special anchors for this type of repair. They are small bolts that when tightened down expand in the back, much like molly anchors, but once tight, you can remove the bolt and the threaded anchor stays in They make smaller ones just for what your doing.
