Fertilize with RX=30.
TThere are 2 types of hydrangea. One that blooms on new stems and one the other that blooms on previous years stem. As long as the winter is not too harsh or the stems are protected over the winter your hydrangeas will bloom. Do not prune in early spring.
I had the same thing happen with a hydrangea given to us by a former neighbor. I trimmed out the dead wood each year and kept it watered. Finally last year, after nearly 6 years, it had the most blossoms ever, until this year. It is currently loaded with blossoms. It is a short plant, less than 4' tall. I have not made any attempts to fertilize or feed it with special hydrangea food. I do have a watering system on the plant.
First identify which type you have. Once you have done that research online whether the type you have should be pruned in early spring or late fall from new or old wood. Done prune until you know the the type you have.
You should use a slow release fertilizer made especially for hydrangea. You begin using this substance at the very beginning of Spring, and every four weeks up until about the first week of July. By then, you should stop feeding the hydrangea for the year, because any late season growth could die during the first frost. I prune mine in late winter to very very early spring, before the buds start to form. Any later than that and you'll just cut off all your potential blossoms.
Thank you all! I will research and see what kind I have and then I should know when to prune! I appreciate s the info!
