Personally, I like using a semi gloss paint mixed with a mixture of plaster of Paris and water (homemade chalk paint). All you have to do is give the dresser a good wipe down, no sanding required. The paint I use is just your standard Glidden or standard store version. It covers even a dark wood. I do 2 or 3 coats, then cover with 2 coats of a polyurethane or polycrylic.

I've always, always used oil based on furniture - water based is just too soft. But remember this - no matter what paint you use, the prep work you do before painting is the single most important thing to do. Without good preparation, the best paint in the world will neither look good nor perform well

You will want to probably use varnish or any can around the varnish that says for furniture

depending on what the furniture is made of will determine what you need to use, but remember prep work is the most important, My advice is to take a draw front down to your local paint dealer and he can advise you
