Like most herbs, basil will grow larger and live longer if the roots are nourished. Water well, then not again until the soil gets dry 1" below the soil. Just stick your finger into the soil until you feel the slightest hint of dampness. Measure your finger if you are not sure. I have short hands and 1" is just short of my index finger knuckle. If I sense moisture before the soil is up to my knuckle, it's not time to water yet. Best wishes 😇

When your finger sinks 2 knuckles down in the dirt and you feel no moisture.
You water when your 2nd knuckle sinks to the level of the dirt and you cannot feel moisture.
