Live traps didn't work for us, probably because groundhogs like roots, vegetable and fruit gardens and sometimes flower gardens. Leg traps are illegal. Habanero pepper (hottest pepper available) can be used by finding their living area and sprinkle pepper generously into their lairs and anywhere they seem to be comfortable. Make sure to Contact your local wildlife control office to find out what laws protect the little beasts and they may have some more volatile and permanent way to get rid of them.
Just a little correction for what Elizabeth Mitchell said habanero peppers are not the hottest pepper there's a pepper called the ghost pepper and it is way hotter than any pepper I've ever tasted I can eat habaneros but I can't even get the ghost pepper chewed halfway up before I have to spit it out and drink like a gallon of milk and anything I can get !! Lol sorry wasn't trying to be mean and tell you you where wrong I was just correcting you if you didn't know of that pepper. 🐮🍶🍼🍵🍺🔥💧🔆 And trust me nothing taste right for a couple days after.

I use a shovel, and cut the soil, and insert moth balls. No more problems. J.
