To be honest I have one tree that has taken many many years to repair it's self but the tree will likely die or will be weak and it is my recommendation that you consider removal.
a tree that is split at the bottom, should probably be removed. Danger thatit might fall at the wrong time and kill someone or hurt them.
If it's a new split, Try taping it up with gaffer tape (round and around as tightly as possible. If both sides still have roots it will grow together . If it has snapped still try this method. If you can give extra support at point of split that will also help. Give it a year, then check the tape.
Hello Karla; I have had this happen, and it has also happened to my Mother.
What we have done in both cases is to make a large brace for it. Wrap tightly to the brace using old rags or else heavy duty tape for plants.
