Back in the old days they would hang them from the crown molding with wire or ribbon.
3M adhesive strips and hooks. They have different hooks/strip weights. They work great.

Hang picture rail.
I had a house with all plaster walls and used special anchors. Although you don't want to put holes in the wall, it is really the best way to hang things without fear of them fall off. Good news, though--- patching plaster is really easy with both spackle and non-gel toothpaste. The texture is really easy to match!
We have just about every square inch of our 112 year old plaster walls hung with paintings. We just use picture hooks, sometimes for something heavy we use two.
3m has a great product that can pull off. Wont harm the walls.
