I back up to open space that is full of wild animals. Due to the drought here in CA it has forced the animals into my garden in an unprecedented way. The birds and ground squirrels eat everything including the bushes! I built a cage for my raised garden boxes from PVC pipe & deer netting. It has helped a lot although I'm going to have to redesign the cages so they can be lifted off for harvesting, I had created them for the short term that the plants needed to grow but the critters still eat everything so the netting is still in place.
It is my understanding (and partial experience) that bird feeders attract rats. My parents had a horrible rat problem and they had quite a few bird feeders. After dealing with the rat problem at their house I wouldn't risk bird feeders at mine. The rat mess was beyond horrible.
