TicTac, if you live in the city call the City Helath Department and let them know there are rats running around in your neighborhood (because trust me when I say they will not just limit themselves to your yard in their search for food and a warm place to live) and let the City know that YOU know about the rats because you saw some running thorugh your own yard. Keep on them every few days if need be, and eventually they will be out to throw down some poison blocks and the rats will be gone within a week. (I know from personal experience when a neighbor decided to turn an empty lot between our homes into his personal trash bin ... grrrrrrrr). Which brings me to another point. Make sure all debris in your yard is picked up, bagged in plastic, then put into a bin with a snug lid on it; also any place where they can hide or nest should be disturbed (bushes/shrubs cut back, weeds cut down, under and behind bushes and shrubs and around the roots should be agitated and cleaned out). If you have a garden then make sure they can't easily get to the food (and they WILL dig 6 inches or so to try to get under a fence). Have the garden well fenced in, and have the wire buried 12 or so inches underground, with a footing of barbed wire or sharp rocks, broken glass, whatever it will take to keep them from digging further). Also, if possible, have a wire "lid" on the top of the enclosure so they can't climb the fence and jump in that way. Other than that the only way I know of is to set traps for them with poison (or have the city do it with blocks of poisoned bait) ... you might be able to keep them away for awhile if you have a friend with a ferret and spread the ferret's feces around the yard (natural enemies).... otherwise get a pro in to get rid of them because they can get ahold of poisons that regular citizens like us can't get by law.

Dorinda, If you have an onion you have a deodorizer -- I am serious! LOL Onions absorb odors and kill bacteria and microbes that cause stink... ironic isn't it? LOL ... but Bob Vila will back me uup on it ;)

Open doors and let it air out...maybe you already are doing that...Spray with essential oil/little vodka/mineral oil combined????

Yes, I have had it open. What would that spray mix do to the paint, though?

    you can try charcoal

That's an idea, but not sure where to get charcoal. I know people use it to cook with on their grills, is this the type of charcoal you are talking about?

try putting a few bowls of ordinary distilled white vinegar inside the locker

    to absorb the odor. :)

WOW...can't believe I never thought of vinegar...I use it for everything since I can't use most cleaners. Thank you!
