What kind of damage do you need to repair ? Are we talking itty-bitty nail holes or omg the children lost control of the skateboard and now there's a gaping hole six inches from the floor ? I've had to fix both and the former is a great deal easier than the latter .

Good help on Lowes site. How depends on size of hole.
Depends on the size of the hole...small nail/screw holes are easily repaired with just drywall compound and a putty knife. Larger holes need to have a piece of drywall inserted in the hole, mesh tape the seams and then use the drywall compound over the mesh. Allow the compound to dry, redo if necessary (compound will shrink) then sand smooth once completely dry.
