Cut back to ground level then dig out the root ball.
Are they full grown, the sucker plants at the trunk or "victory" plants spread by birds eating the seeds?
1. If they are sucker plants, trim them as close to the trunk as possible.
2. If they are victory plants, pour boiling water over the roots and then pull them up. (This is much easier to do once the plants have been watered or rained on (to make the soil looser).
3. If you need to get rid of a tree, first try offering it on Let it go or Craigslist...they dig.

Dig, dig, dig!
I dug down and used a reciprocating saw around the base. Then I pulled back the roots that were cut off. I repeated this until I got to the tap root. After quite a fight I was able to remove it. Since mine was well established the root system was insane. I began to remove the roots. After much digging and many days I was able to get rid of them. It was a pretty bush, but I am thrilled it’s finally gone.
