Make sure they get lots of shade! I have a Hosta bed that is beautiful on the north side of my house. I throw handfuls of Epsom Salts on them in the early spring and that's about it. Once in a great while I hose them down if it has been hot and dry for an extended period.

I have hosta and ferns planted in a bed that is just getting too crowded. I'm 75 years old now and have metal plates in my back. I have told people if they would dig the hosta and ferns up they could take and divide the plants for their own gardens. People look at you like "what, you won't plant them for me ? " Is there an easier way to dig up and separate hosta and ferns? Please help this old lady.

They definitely don't like the direct sun. Keep the slugs off of them by putting beer in little bottle tops or small dishes and putting them around your hosta. Keep the voles away by digging a small trench around them and dumping crushed oyster shells all around them. Voles will destroy a hosta in no time.

Shade is essential, maybe plant them near the front of your house so they can get shade from your awning- good luck!

water, when they turn brown cut them back. They will come back. My daughter cuts hers down to the ground. They come back fuller. Then you can divide.
