You could install peel and stick tiles. I love those! Or you can get big comfy area rug.
We bought rugs from HomeGoods, At Home, Marshalls for our house. We have hardwood floors & didn't want to cover with carpet. Watch for sales & clearance.
PAINT THE FLOORS
The area rugs are a great idea, especially if you are able to get remnants from a store that sells wall-to-wall carpeting. You can place pieces of furniture fully on the rugs, partially on the rugs, or place the rugs in between the furniture in the most-traveled areas of the room. BUT, if you do not want ANY carpets at all, there are many other ideas such as the peel & stick tiles mentioned above, inexpensive tile or laminate flooring (both of which can end up needing additional supplies and tools, which raise the cost a bit). Check for leftover flooring/tile at places like Habitat for Humanity Restores, etc.
In the past I've used "Indoor/Outdoor Carpeting", back in 1973-74 and don't recall needing any additional supplies or tools, except maybe beer and pizza to supply to the helpers since we lived on the second floor at the time!! And of course there were curves in the stairwell~! :( I've not had a chance to shop around for these but check anywhere that sells loose flooring: Home Depot, Lowes, Marshalls, etc., maybe even Good Will~! I've got a large living room, good size master bedroom, medium size bedroom and a 3rd bedroom smaller so it's been converted into an office room for me, but since I've got an almost 17 yr. old cat I may get one for in the office as I do keep her litter box in here, but I do have an extra large rubber mat under that and it's been working great! Good luck, but do check for sales, I know I will be!
