Place a stick or pencil next to the stem of the plant and the worms won't be able to wrap around the stem.... the circumference will be too big around.

When you put your tomato plant in the ground, you should always put popsicle sticks around the stem. Surround it with them. The cutworms can not cut through wood. This has always worked for me.
