I'm in Southern Ontario, and I have periwinkle growing in my front and back yard....as well as some ivy. They both seem to like the shade.....and a good bit of rain [but they aren't fussy....]I have clay soil, and they don't seem to mind it one bit.

You can plant creeping phlox. This blooms in spring. You can also plant pink ripple thyme. This flowers in summer and has a nice lemony scent.

Have you thought about the new artificial turf? I don't know how large your yard is, but This Old House just featured it on their site. Truly amazing and cool! I wish you well!
