I'm in Southern Ontario, and I have periwinkle growing in my front and back yard....as well as some ivy. They both seem to like the shade.....and a good bit of rain [but they aren't fussy....]I have clay soil, and they don't seem to mind it one bit.
You can plant creeping phlox. This blooms in spring. You can also plant pink ripple thyme. This flowers in summer and has a nice lemony scent.
The front under my pine trees has violets in one area, and lillies of the valley in another.

it's pretty good. The thing about this is that it has a strong root system and is hard to get rid of.
