aerate well, tilling can help kill the weeds, then seed with a good seed that is fast growing and thick, like bluegrass.

If you want to work around the bunnies you can do a bit of quick tilling around where the bunnies are living. Not sure of the size of the yard but if it's a decent size you can rent a tiller at Home Depot for a day or two. Once the ground is loose, getting the weeds and other things out won't be nearly as hard. You can till by hand it's just very labor intensive and it is summer. Once you are able to get the majority of the junk out of the soil you can smooth it out and put in sod. You have an instant yard when you do it that way. Sod is very easy to lay. Just to let you know, when you put the sod down, the bunny family will see the instant buffet. If you use seed, those bunnies will eat every leaf as it comes up. You may want to wait for fall for this project. The bunnies will be heading for hibernation and the weather will be better.

first process ia to rototill the entire lawn. next add tow to three inches of top soil, grass seed for your area and starter fertilizer, top with peat moss and keep well watered until established.

to get a better deal on sod, find an actual sod farm in your location. Home Depot type stores mark up the price. It can get pricy so waiting until fall is best as it's cooler. less water and then the rains are on their way and that will really help new grass.

Kill the weeds and crab grass off with black plastic first. Loosen the soil up or add a thin layer of top soil. Spread your seed with a spreader. The bag of seed should tell you what to set the spreader at. Gently go over the seed with a garden rake and rake it in to the soil. I then always cover it with hay and water everyday. Don't be in a rush to cut it. You want to make sure the roots are well established. Otherwise you can just pull the grass out with the mower. The best time to start grass seed is spring or fall. Make sure you buy a good brand of seed. You do get what you pay for with grass seed.
