We have Ugly coral ceramic floor tile(and don't live in Florida) & I'd like to change it but don't have the money. Is there a product out there that I can use to paint the floor & that will last?

  • Sorry no. Tile is not meant to be painted. If you do paint it, it will not last. Tile is made for wear and tear. Other alternatives would be to scour the markdown aisles and remnant areas of the carpet and big box stores for flooring and just take your time and change out the floor when you can fit it in your budget. How big is the area? And what color are the walls? Can you hide it with rugs? Good luck.

Yes, you can paint tile. I am an IUPAT Painter, we used to re-paint the tile floors in our shop often to give the new guys something new to do. You just have to have the proper kind of paint. Go to your local hardware store, or Lowes or wherever and talk to an associate and see what they have available. If they do not have any paint for your project, try online. Before painting make sure to de-grime the tiles really well and give them a good scuffing with sandpaper then a good clean with general detergent. Use an epoxy or urethane bonding primer. Epoxy primers give the best durability and can be topped with just about any kind of paint. As far as type of paint to use, pick something rated for high durability. Use a semi-gloss or high gloss paint and top with a latex top coat. Allow the tiles to dry for 2-3 days then top with several coats of urethane which will help protect from water and spills and traffic. results can vary. Do your homework on what kind of paint to use. Take care to think over what type of location you are in. Humidity and what not can affect what kind of paint is suitable for you. Play around with different colors patterns and grout colors as well. You can even stencil on designs if you want to spice it up a little.
