What does it mean when your rose grows a knob or "hip" on the stem?

Should one cut it off, prune behind or in front of it. What purpose do they serve.

They do have a use, an additive to some vitamins, brew a tea. If you do not need or want them you can just trim off. I give mine to my neighbor who makes a tea out of them.

its actuall the fruit of the rose...good good bit of vit c. Make tea with it.
Rose hips are the fruit of the rose, and a great source of vitamin C, you can make tea from them if you haven't sprayed them with anything toxic. Some folks make rose hip jelly too.
