I am having someone cut me slabs of wood that I will paint and seal. There is still labor involved in the prep, but the wood is free since its from a tree we just took down.

What kind of path do you want? Gravel can work and is very inexpensve. Another opion is to lay concrete pavers.

You can purchase a mold at Lowe's that when poured with concrete will create a faux flagstone walkway. Easy to do and looks great!
pallets are very economical and if you use a sawsaw east to take apart I would think a good paint for exterior would be needed I used 2 long 2x4s and attached biards about 28" in length to it it turned out great
I recently found a person who was removing a tennis court by pieces. I ask if I could haul them off, which they gladly agreed to let me do. I took the pieces home and made a cobblestone walkway in my yard. Looked great and the neighbors loved it
