It depends on if you have enough money to do a quick fix. Stones aren't a good idea because weeks grow among them quickly. If it were me and I wanted something that would last, I would cement the area.
Don't you love it when your kids "help". Astro turf would be the cheapest and easiest to do. You can get pavers but the ground needs to leveled. Good luck and what ever you choose ask you lovely daughter and grand to help.
