How can I remove difficult wallpaper?

I want to texturize my bathroom walls, then paint. The wallpaper is proving very difficult to remove. Some of my research says it can be sealed with an oil based primer, then texturize over it. Anyone have experience with this?

I don't know about this, neither what your bathroom looks like... But I would certainly think about faux brick pannels or barnwood walls... Maybe both!

Home Depot is selling faux barnwood planks for a fraction of the price of real barnwood!

    Good luck! :)

First off what type texture are you going for? I have taken wall plaster and just troweled it on the wall ,making swirls with the trowel. When plaster is dry, I painted with semi-gloss wall paint. Still on and still looks great....you might like that idea...no oil based primer needed.

If you are having trouble getting it off now..I doubt if it would pull loose with the plaster over it. Without using any chemicals in the water...wet a rag or sponge and wipe/wet the wallpaper in a small area to see if it's easy to peel the paper off. IF paper doesn't come off put some plaster on the same spot...wait a day or two of drying with plaster on and see what happens ...for myself..I would just plaster over paper.!

HOWEVER...you should still ask a wallpaper store what they think about this...but remember they will try to sell you a better solution.

Just make sure that whatever texture, etc you decide to use does not cause the wallpaper to bubble and peel from the moisture or you will have a mess on your hands. Have you tried scoring the wallpaper with a little roller called a wallpaper tiger? Then, spray the paper with warm water and wipe it with a damp sponge to soak the water into the paper....then peel it off. Usually this method works pretty well.

Yes, I have scored, and used DIF, but wallpaper is being very stubborn.

Yeah I would do the work to remove the old wallpaper, you can't be sure it won't lift from the moisture in the bathroom, and then its going to be twice as hard to remove. Rent a steamer from a tool rental place, and douse with fabric softner after you score it. Then put your steamer on it, and after a few minutes see if it will budge. If not steam some more.

Use 1/2 water 1/2 clothes softener into a spray bottle...score the wallpaper and already the softener solution...wait about 20 minutes and start peeling off the wall paper

spray with a light oil and like soak in overnite, it will loosen the glue and you should be able to scrape off.

What type of oil? Have used DIF and Pirhana, but not very good results.

I have never had much luck with DIF, but some people swear by it. I always use either plain water, or plain water with a bit of vinegar added. Sometimes, for really stubborn paper, if you warm the water up a bit, it will help dissolve the wallpaper flue. Good luck to you!
