Question about replacing Sunroom Flooring

I am replacing a floor that is half carpet and half ceramic. Why can't they just lay the new tile over the old. It is on a cement floor. Then put backer board where the carpet was to make them even. They say they can't do that and I will have to rip out all of the old tile. It would have no effect on the existing doors.

If the old tile is not perfectly level the new on top will crack.

If a professional is advising against laying the new flooring over the existing, then I would take their advice and rip up the existing tile. Laying the new flooring over any existing will obviously be raising the floor height and that will cause issues with doors opening and closing. If it were me and my home I would bite the bullet and go ahead and do it right the first time around. It could cause unforeseen costly repairs in the future and then you'll be wishing you had removed the tile to begin with. Good luck!

  • Sorry, floor guys are correct. The entire surface needs to be level and clean for your new flooring to be properly installed and safe. If you do not do this anything you put on top will fail in a short peiod of time.

agree with professionals. you risk the new tile cracking. it's really not that hard to remove old tile, just get underneath the first one with a big heavy duty crow bar and they pop up.

This has nothing to do with the doors and everything to do with the integrity of the floors . The tile has to be laid on a completely clean and level surface or it will crack and disenigrate within weeks of the installation . And because you insisted on going against the professional advice , no warranty for you !

If you want to save money , take up the old flooring yourself .

I agree with all that have responded. Tile over tile is not an option. You won't find any trades person that would agree to that kind of installation and guarantee the work. If it's a question of cost, then a diy demolotion of the old tiles is easy and a good learning experience for someone new to diy. If you're new to renovation and demo, it's really critical that you build a network of tradespeople that you can trust to be honest and straight forward with you. There'll be projects that require a license professional (electricians, plumbers) to perform and you will need to trust them when they give advice and the costs of doing the work. Rule of thumb - if you're new to diy, always get 3 quotes.
