My thought is to use the idea of a dresser but have it blend in as if it is a wall of cabinets. I've got a sofa table that I use for some of my storage but instead of doors on mine I'd prefer to switch to drawers and then I'd have a wider range of what it can hold. Then you can either sort drawers by type of DVD or alphabetical. I hope this gives you an idea that you can work with.
Hunt for "lawyer" type bookshelves, they have lift up, slide in glass doors. Here is an example of what to look for - hunt second hand stores, yard sales, etc. You can unify them by painting or restaining. Or china hutches, provided you have a room to devote to them.

Scour the local Goodwill for old dressers ,look at garage sales and Salvation Army .
If you have room, how about a vertical style file cabinet. The kind that allow the files to be vertical and not horizontal. That way, you can pull out the drawers and the titles will be either way, as you choose.
Personally, I hate books that make me crane my neck to read them. This will give you the option of inserting them so you pull out the drawer and read them like you would if you stacked them on top of each other, not next to each other.
Here's a photo. Be sure and L bracket it to the wall to prevent tipping.
Too bad there are no longer movie rental stores (but great we have Netflix and such) My daughter has a very large collection of both DVD's and VCR tapes and stores them in bookcases. I would like something where I could read the title easily and put them in alphabetical order. BTW just for fun. . . what is your favorite movie?
Buy a short long 6 drawer dresser and put dividers in the drawers to separate them. It can also be used for a sofa table or even the entertainment center. You could even get a couple trunks and have trays made to hold the movies and use them as end tables
Actually I had this problem myself recently. I bought a dvd shelf unit that is all open with adjustable shelves and it holds over 500 dvd's. I can move it around and it allowed me to organize them for easy viewing. Amazon has quite a few to choose from. It had to be assembled though but was easy.
I was thinking for you to come up with a bigger dresser with more drawers that would hold your collection. If that has been a satisfactory way so far you'd just need to super size it.
Collecting movies on DVDs makes no sense now. No one uses DVDs anymore, and you can find any movie online easily.
