Maybe you should done the stencil before the varnish ? If the varnish has been there for ages, sand or strip or both . Stencil the desired design and then apply several layers of water based polyurethane over it, lightly sanding between each layer .
I would draw it free hand, sand the table lightly and just draw it copying a picture or a real branch. It doesn't have to be perfect and would be a lot easier than fooling with a stencil.
there s a liquid you buy in the hardware store that is a liquid sander. Just put it on the area to be sanded , then stencil the usual way. When done and dry, coat the whole thing with a water based acrylic wood cover. It comes in Matt, satin, semigloss, and gloss. Good luck.
Sorry, I didn't make any sense with that. I meant to explain you don't have to sand if you use the liquid sander. Then stencil right over it.
