i live in Ma and last summer I put my orchid out in the summer and it did very well. Just brought it back in in the fall. I didn't do it this year because it is in full bloom and I wanted to enjoy it IN the house. I'm sure if you are in a temperate climate it could stay out as they were intended by nature to do. Good luck, and they are so much fun to watch.
in a frost free area with cooler summer nights sixty degrees and below, the orchids can be planted outside, especially the cymbidium orchids. They tend to grow better than if inside year round.
That would depend on what zone you live in.
