Mix 1/3 cup of plaster of Paris and 1/3 cup of cool water; stir until completely smooth. Mix that with 1 cup of latex paint and stir thoroughly. This will make enough chalk-finish paint for one coat on a six-drawer dresser. Chalk-finish paint should not be stored and reused.

chalk paint is a paint that creates a great matte finish. It comes in many brands and in many cases can be painted directly on without much prep.
Chalk paint is just a special paint that would look like you used chalk. It is a flat finish. Can be very pretty.
I have used chalk paint on shelves, bottles, my coffee table, ceramic vases, picture frames.....I really like it obviously. You just clean whatever you want to paint and paint away. It adheres really well to anything. I just use a wipe on poly to protect it when I am done (mostly just on furniture pieces). It is really versatile. If you want a distressed look, you just paint a base color, let dry, then paint a top color, let dry and when you sand it the color underneath will show through giving you a distressed look. It's fun to work with.
