I just do by hand. Anything applied will get to the ryzomes and kill the plant. At least that's my solution. I'm more for natural than weed killers. Been reading about Roundup causing cancer.
I do by hand. If you use harsh chemicals, they may get into the ryzomes and kill the Iris. I'm more for natural if possible. I've recently been reading how Roundup is being thought to have ingredients that cause cancer.
You will have to pull them by hand. I would also mulch after pulling all weeds. This does help to keep the weeds down. After a few years you will find it less time consuming to weed.

Pull the weeds, slap down some newspaper or cardboard and cover with mulch. Done and done!
