I have the Peterson's guide to medicinal plants and also Planetary Herbology book by Michael Tierra. Both are wealth of information. If you only want to purchase one, get Planetary Herbology, it expains exactly what parts are used and how to prepare them. Both explain the uses. If there is a particular herb you are interested in, I will happily share what I have learned if I have experience with it.

Look up medicinal herbs and plants on the internet. Make sure it is plants that you can grow in your area. Also, unless you are getting really reliable information, don't try to treat yourself with these plants. Many can have a very minimal difference between helpful and lethal. There can also be a difference in the strength of the herbs and plants depending on all the different growing conditions.

Check out pintrest there are a lot of good pins to sites with good info on there. A lot depends on how big your area is and what you want. Mint is good, if you have enough space you can also grow Elderberry and Goji berries. There is a yahoo group called Organic Homestead Gardening run by an old indian friend of mine in KY that has a lot of good information on this. He is getting up there in years but has a lot of good info in his head and in the files along with several others in the group.
