I am not familiar with plants in that area, I am in Texas! However, I personally like perennials so that I don't have to replant every year. You can always add a splash of annuals for extra color. Check with your local nursery to recommend varieties that will work.

Your Daylilies, the orange one, will do well by the river. And the Bee Balm(Monarda) the red. They are both keepers. Forget-Me-Nots should too. You can go online with the state and get suggestions and also learn what is native and what is invasive. I am doing the same with my yard in Vermont. Clear out any bush Honeysuckle, Burning Bush and Barberry. Lilacs are good. No Bearded Iris by the river, they like it dry. Find the gardeners in your town, they will have the best info and would be glad to share. You have picked the best state in the country!

This map will help you identify your Growing Zone. Once you know what zone you're in, you can google things such as "perennials for growing zone 5", etc.

btw....I think the thing w/ red berries is a weed

The best advice I got moving into a new house was to do nothing to landscaping for a full year so you can see what comes up at different times of the year, what blooms, etc. I almost dug out what turned out to be my favorite bush. Then you can move plants, shrubs, etc. as you want and get rid of what you truly don't like.

thank you so much, it has been a bit of a challenge because much of what was planted was disrupted because the owners had a major repair of septic.. I am trying to be patient and trim not destroy many plants because I am not sure what they are

I totally agree with Jesse's recommendation of not doing any landscaping to your home for the first year you've lived there. You never know where you truly want to plant things until you see light, shadow, etc. Every plant you pictured, I would keep. I'd suggest you take pictures of the plants' leaves and their ultimate flowers, and make notes as to when they bloomed. Everything pictured would draw hummers, birds, bees, butterflies.

Day Lili are poison to pets,. if you have pets that like to eat plants. I don't know about the Bee balm Just Google that . I have it because bees love it ,I want to keep the bees coming to my garden. Both plants if they get to large for the area they are in can be divided. Just Google when is best to divide them in your area.
