Use metal or wood moulding to hold in place, or use clear plastic mirror clips from the hardware store.

Although this isn't a back splash it is a large piece of glass held in place by plastic clips. You can see the clips in this photo. I wanted something colorful for this blank wall. So I decoupaged the vases with flowers and the two plates, (in reverse on the back of the glass) and then gave it a coat of white paint to make the colors pop. You can paint the glass any way you like and then just clean the front with windex. A hardware store can cut the glass to your measurements.
I agree with the clear plastic clips. It would make cleaning it much easier than using a frame of any kind.
