use small items silly
I don't understand why you can't put in large decorative items in an apartment. Maybe not couch size, but surely a large, light weight painting or two would not hurt. Use Command hooks. They don't mar walls when you take them down to move.
Too many small items just make a small area look cluttered and smaller.
Smaller scale rocking chair with gingham pads, afghan for colour, rustic wooden floating shelves (made from barn board) stencilled sign, distressed coffee table/end tables
check out the work of famous decorators like Sister Parrish, Kitty Barthlomew etc. Get some country decorating magazines (you can look for free at your library) what means country to you? Gingham checks, quilts, stoneware, pottery., log furniture? Think about what you really like and on your next trip to Goodwill or such; the items will jump out at you.
