I would use white or cream chalk paint on the whole surface, then distress by sanding the corners, trim edges, and a little on the sides. That way you wouldn't have the peeling from a crackle or antique process. The white or cream would bring out the color in the rug and brighten the room. Best wishes 😇
How about a nice distressed gray to go with your rug and wall color. https://www.google.com/search?q=pictures+of+distressed+gray+chest&client=opera&hs=0YD&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiq9vXT657VAhUM42MKHVNCCc8Q7AkISA&biw=1366&bih=629
I've def looked into that option 😉
This looks like a new piece of furniture. Yes, I would sand as much as you can just to rough up the surface. You don't have to remove the whole finish, as long as you are using chalk paint, and as long as you like the current color showing through when you distress the new layers. 😇
Isn't your TV a little high? If it was two inches above the furniture you have, the wires would not show as much and it would be better for watching. As far as the furniture, what color is the other pieces in your room? I think it looks good dark and sort of matches your TV.
