Cut it close to the wood with a hack saw or electricians nippers
Take the hanger(s) to your local hardeware store ask if they have bolt cutters for cutting chains and cable,they should be able to cut the metal for you.
with the groove in the ends you probably will need to saw them straight, could you use a hack saw or something to cut the wood?
If you have a rotary tool (like a Dremel) you can cut off one end and pull it through.
I'm thinking the same thing...dremel the end off and pull through. Now I have to go get one and try myself ...:)
Leave the metal part there. Use it to anchor it to the wall.
